I am a New York-based playwright, musical theater composer and deviser from Hong Kong.
As a playwright and composer, I dedicate my theatrical writing to exploring the realm of myth, religion, and any genre that traces back to the beginning of humanity, where we learn from our history and seek a way forward through storytelling. My work has been selected as a semi-finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, nominated for the Drama League Awards, and produced in the United States, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
I collaborate frequently with the brilliant Erin J. Reifler. Together we were the finalists of Dramatist Guild fellowship, and were chosen as the Merit Award Winners for New Musical Inc. in collaboration with Disney Imagineering's New Voices Project. Our work includes 'A Pain in the Neck', 'Stories of Home' and many more.
As a deviser, I create theatre for young audiences and co-founded Eat the Peadies, an Astoria-based theatre group, with Jeff Wildermuth to make accessible, community-centered theatre for families.
I'm a 2024-25 LabWorks artist of New Victory, a TONY-award winning theatre, and I graduated from NYU's Graduate musical theatre writing program.
When I'm not writing, I run, draw and design apps. If you want to chat, email me at zoniatsang@gmail.com
